What are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are sent to or accessed from your web browser or your device’s hard drive. A Cookie typically contains the name of the domain (internet location) from which the Cookie originated, the duration of the Cookie (i.e. when it expires), and a randomly generated unique number or similar identifier. A Cookie also may contain information about your device, such as settings, browsing history, and activity while using the Site.
We use two types of Cookies: persistent Cookies and session Cookies.
Cookies that The Counsel set on the Site are called first-party Cookies. Cookies set by any other party are called third-party Cookies. Third-party Cookies enable third-party features or functionality on or through the Site, such as analytics. Third-party Cookies can recognize your computer both when it visits our Site and also when it visits certain other websites.
To learn more about Cookies generally, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.
Why do we use Cookies?
We use Cookies for several reasons. Some Cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Site to operate whilst other Cookies enable us to enhance the experience of our members and partners on our Site. The Counsel mostly uses session Cookies that expire as soon as you close your Internet Browser. We only use persistent Cookies to maintain the state of your questionnaire should you browse away from a survey and wish to continue where you left off. This Cookie is in no way used for tracking or holding personal information and will be deleted at the end of the questionnaire or 1 day after the start of the questionnaire. We also use a Cookie to keep you logged on to The Counsel website, to save you having to log in over and over again.
The types and functions of Cookies served through our Site are described below.
The following is known as an “essential” Cookie:
“Essential” (or strictly-necessary) Cookies are first-party Cookies that allow us to deliver the Site to you and to provide specific services that you request from us. They are set in response to actions made by you to change your privacy settings, log in, or complete forms, as well as for essential Site functions such as to control fraud, use security elements during browsing, and enable dynamic content (for example, loading animation of a text or image.) Since they are strictly necessary, these Cookies are downloaded by default and are needed to be displayed on the Site.
The following are known as “non-essential” Cookies:
“Performance” (or analytics) Cookies help us collect information about how visitors use the Site so that we can analyse and improve our Site. We use information collected by performance Cookies in aggregated form, rather than linking the information to individual Site users. Where permitted by applicable law, we will deploy first-party performance Cookies automatically when you visit our Site. If you opt out of or do not allow performance Cookies, we will not know you when you visit our Site.
“Functional” Cookies allow the Site to remember your choices or preferences, such as information in forms or previous activities on our Site. These Cookies allow us to offer you a personalised experience while using the Site. The Counsel may set these Cookies. If you do not allow these Cookies, then some or all of the services available on the Site may not function properly.
Essential Cookies
Essential Cookies are Cookies we use which are strictly necessary for the functionality of our Site, to enable it to work and they allow you to navigate the Site easily. When you first visit our Site, we automatically set essential Cookies on your device that are strictly necessary for our Site to work.
